To test this, scientists stimulated the main auditory cortex in participants’ brains with smaller, harmless electrical currents. If contributors required this space to understand speech, stimulating it would reduce, or distort, their notion of what they ended up getting instructed.

Then, the group stimulated an region in the nonprimary auditory cortex.
